Muscles
are enveloped by a tough membrane, called fascia. Due to a variety
of factors including specific sleep disorder, or sleep deprivation,
muscle strain, inactivity, muscle injury, inflammation, decreased
blood flow, viral infections, immune system dysfunction, etc.
the muscle and its fascia can develop complex, painful conditions.
Fibromyalgia and myofascial pain syndrome also known as trigger
point disease are unique among them. They are characterized
by either diffuse or localized pain and frequently fatigue and
movement difficulties.
Some authors believe in a connection between fibromyalgia and chronic "fatigue syndrome." Viral infection or immune system abnormality may play a role in both and they may coincide with Epstein Barr, or other viral infections. Trigger points may mimic symptoms of unrelated conditions such as a heart attack, sweating, nausea, dizziness, headaches, etc.
A variety of treatments have been described. Adequate sleep, rest and judicious exercises, physical therapy, injections, medications, vitamins, diet, etc. may contribute to relief of the symptoms. Physical therapy, including ultrasound, electrical stimulation, massage may be helpful.
For more information or for an evaluation please call
New York Midtown Orthopedics at 212-758-4688.
Remember: timely diagnosis and treatment may prevent chronic pain, surgery and permanent disability.
