ROTATOR CUFF IMPINGEMENT AND TEAR
Rotator cuff tear is one of the most common shoulder injuries.
It may cause severe pain and shoulder dysfunction. As it courses
down, the rotator cuff tendon crosses the shoulder joint. At
the so-called "critical zone" the rotator cuff may become compromised
while in the hanging arm position. Over time, this contributes
to cuff degeneration.
In addition, acceleration and deceleration movements of the arm in sports activities may lead to rotator cuff impingement. During shoulder elevation the cuff insertion area at the humeral head rotates into a narrow gap under the acromial process, subjecting the rotator cuff to friction. Recurrent friction can lead to wearing and thinning away of the rotator cuff, that eventually may result in tendon tear, causing inflammation and painful limitation of shoulder movements.
Early diagnosis and prompt conservative treatment is critical. Treatment consists of physical therapy, rehabilitative shoulder exercises and judicious pain relief. In complete tear surgery may become necessary.
